Install Website Tracking with Preloaded GTM Setup (BETA)

Getting Started

This guide is designed to make the setup process for server-side tracking with Google Tag Manager as quick and easy as possible. The guide assumes that you already have a website with Google Tag Manager installed. These are the steps:

  1. Import the preloaded GTM setup
  2. Add your server information
  3. Start tracking server-side
If you want to use the Tracklution template for Google Tag Manager, but you have an old Tracklution setup in your Google Tag Manager, you should replace this in its entirety.
For individual tags or if you have Tracklution installed via Shopify App or WooCommerce plugin, read this article: Google Tag Manager – Individual and Custom events.

Step 1 of 3: Preloaded setup

The preloaded Google Tag Manager setup contains:

  • Tracklution GTM Template
  • Standard Events GTM Tags
  • Standard dataLayer Event Triggers
  • GTM Data Layer Variables
Download: PreloadedGoogleTagManagerSetup.json
Upload the Preloaded Google Tag Manager setup in your GTM container

To upload the setup in Google Tag Manager, open up Admin, click Import Container and select Merge - Rename.

By using Merge-Rename, the Preloaded Google Tag Manager setup cannot conflict with any existing configuration.
If you make a mistake, you can always restore Google Tag Manager to a previous version by going to Versions, click the three dots and select Set as Latest Version.
Your import should look like this:

Step 2 of 3: Add your server info

Open the Folders tab in Google tag Manager. After you have imported the Preloaded Google Tag Manager setup, here you'll find the Tracklution Server folder.

Place your ID and domains into their corresponding GTM variable:

  • 01_TRL container ID (e.g. LS-00000000-0)
  • 02_TRL domain (e.g. tralut.mywebsite.com)
  • 03_TRL fallback domain (e.g. main-0000.trlution.com)
The information you need about your data-server is most easily accessed in your Tracklution dashboard at the bottom of the page.

Step 3 of 3: Data Collection

Your Google Tag Manager container is now ready for server-side tracking.

Collect the browser-events and data that you want to send to your server. Your Tracklution server will then process and forward this data to your ad-platforms (connectors) accordingly. The Preloaded Google Tag Manager setup includes a prebuilt data collection setup that fits most website-builds. If you already have a set of triggers and variables for your events in Google Tag Manager, then you can just replace the preloaded setup with these. If you notice that an event isn't showing up in your server (Tracklution) or data is missing, go through the triggers and variables for that event-tag and replace them with a set specific to your website.

Click here for more information about Google Tag Manager triggers and variables.
